fiber art
Fiber art covers a wide range of materials and techniques. Whether marbling paper and silk, weaving hand-dyed tencel or coiling a cotton core, it could all fall into the category of fiber art. Weaving, spinning and dyeing is most often considered "craft" because of its functionality and many critics would not consider these things to be "artistic". These are all techniques that I love and practice but I have gravitated to the more sculptural use of the coiling technique. It allows me to create both functional and totally non-functional pieces. These pieces can range from 5" to 24" and sometimes larger. It has become a challenge to find new ways to embellish and grow each sculpture by using both nature and man-made materials. Fiber is all around us daily and sometimes it hides in the most obvious places.
